I grew up in a small beach town in New Jersey, spending much of my time surfing, skateboarding, and in the ocean. My father was a marine biologist who filled our home with aquariums. Vacations were spent scuba diving. I was captivated by how water contained and shifted light, the luminous colors of tropical fish, the way in which forms appeared and disappeared through water. My fascination with light, color, and flowing movement led me to glassblowing, and eventually to painting, where I continue to explore these qualities in new ways.
My paintings explore the relationship between the physical body and the intangible things it holds—thoughts, memories, emotions, spirit. I use paint's varying degrees of transparency and opacity to suggest different states of embodiment. Luminous, transparent layers evoke what is fleeting and immaterial, while opaque forms convey the solidity of the body and material world. Ultimately, I want my work to hold both the weight of the material world and the fleeting, less tangible aspects of being alive.
